Proposed Citizenship Fee Increase

Immigration Policy Update

The government has proposed a large increase in the fee to apply for U.S. citizenship. This change is not in effect yet.

Key details of the proposal:

  • The online filing fee for Form N-400 would increase from $710 to $1,280.
  • The paper filing fee would increase from $760 to $1,330.
  • The proposal would also end reduced fees and fee waivers.
  • Certain current and former military service members would remain exempt.

The fee increase is not final. The public can submit comments through August 24 before the government decides whether to issue a final rule.

If you are eligible and planning to apply for citizenship, you may want to prepare your application now, before the increased fee takes effect. Talk to a trusted legal provider first if you have questions about your eligibility or immigration history.
